St Luke's CE
First School
This Week:
We have had another very busy week in school with Science Week and the planetarium visit. Next week is the last week of the spring term and again, it is very busy. Year 2 will be out of school on Tuesday morning at their sport event, we have 2 parents ‘evenings planned, along with the Easter Experience at the Bridge Church and our Easter egg hunt and Easter bonnet parade!
This has been a very short term overall, but our children have continued to work extremely hard in their learning and enjoy all of the experiences offered.
Parents’ Evening
Next week the teachers are looking forward to meeting parents and carers and sharing the great progress the children are making. We will be sharing the children’s work and celebrating all their successes so far this year. Please double check the time you have booked your appointment. We do ask that parents/carers arrive on time at school and please be mindful that each appointment is set for 10 minutes. If you feel you need to speak to the teacher for longer, please let them know and they can arrange to speak with you again after the Easter break if needed.
Attendance:
Our overall attendance for the year to date is 94.55%.
We will be sharing your child’s attendance information with parents/carers next week at parents’ evening.
We are noticing a pattern of more absences on a Monday and then attendance increasing across the week. We will be monitoring this closely in the coming weeks.
This week’s attendance:
Well done Lions!!

No-Bot the Robot with No Bottom! By Sue Hendra
Possibly my favourite story I have ever taught in a Year 1 class which led to some brilliant writing!
Bernard the Robot loses his bottom on the park swing, and sets off to find it. Every time he gets close, it disappears again! Bird was using it as a nest, but it was too heavy; Bear used it in his drum kit, but it was too tinny; the Squirrels built sandcastles with it...and now it looks as if they're sailing away in it. Will Bernard EVER get his bottom back?
The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo
Another favourite from my years teaching in Years 3 and 4 and linking our History learning to our reading lessons. Our Tigers are currently learning about the Ancient Egyptians so may be interested in this one!
This is an Egyptian spin on the classic Cinderella tale.
Poor Rhodopis! She has nothing―no mother or father, and no friends. She is a slave, from the far-off country of Greece. Only the beautiful rose-red slippers her master gives her can make Rhodopis smile.
So, when a falcon swoops down and snatches one of the slippers away, Rhodopis is heartbroken. For how is she to know that the slipper will land in the lap of the great Pharaoh himself and who would ever guess that the Pharaoh has promised to find the slipper’s owner and make her queen of all Egypt
Easter Events…
Final reminders:
Wednesday 20th March – Easter Experience at The Bridge Church. Reverend Ruth and her team are planning another fantastic experience for us in the church. Each class will visit the church across the course of the day to take part in this experience.
Friday 22nd March – The PTA are organising the annual Easter egg hunt on the playground for every class.
Friday 22nd March – We are inviting the children to create and decorate bonnets and hats and wear them to school on the last day of term. Weather permitting, we are hoping to hold an Easter bonnet parade on the playground at the start of the day.
Parents and carers are very welcome to stay on the playground for a few minutes first thing to watch the children in the parade.
A reminder of our school vision which we have recently shared with our school community:
In our St Luke’s family, we recognise we are all God’s children and through our caring and nurturing environment, we follow His word. We trust and rely on God’s teaching so that we can encourage each other, develop our relationship with one another and the world, and flourish in all that we do.
God’s word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119 v.105)
World Sleep Day
Today on the radio I heard it is world sleep day. Please see the poster at the end of the newsletter for tips and establishing healthy sleep patterns.
Clubs
Our Summer 1 clubs letter will be sent home on Monday 18th March. Please check to make sure you have this so you can sign up for the club/s your child would like to attend. Every half term we offer a wide range of clubs free of charge to our children and these operate on a first come/first served basis. Staff will ensure each child is given a letter on the same day in order to ensure fairness in allocating clubs places. Please discuss the clubs with your child and ensure they are fully committed to joining. We often have children who drop out of clubs or who choose not to go on a particular week, which is disappointing when other children have not been allocated a place because the club was full. Summer 1 clubs will run for 6 weeks from the week beginning Monday 15th April to week beginning Monday 20th May.
British Science Week
We have had a great time celebrating British Science Week! Every class has explored different areas of Science to get a wider understand of what science actually is – In Tigers Class, the children have looked at marine biologists, geologists, mechanical engineers, entomologists, zoologists and much more! Following this year’s theme of ‘Time’, Lions class created their own water clocks and explored how effective they were at tracking time, but they discovered they weren’t the most reliable tool! In Key Stage 1, the children have investigated whether adding extra ingredients to jelly changes the time it takes to set, and in Bears class the children have been exploring the life cycles of a caterpillar! Hopefully the children will be inspired to tell you all about their Science learning, and maybe even have a go at leading a few of their experiments at home!
The Science Week poster competition is still ongoing, the deadline for this is Wednesday 20th March.
Black Hole Planetarium Experience
To celebrate British Science Week in school, today our PTA arranged for a special visitor in school. Each class had the opportunity to visit the Black Hole Planetarium in the school hall today. Each class has come out of this experience buzzing with excitement about what they have learnt. Thank you to our PTA for arranging this event for the children!
School Council
This week I have met with our School Council and asked them the questions –
What do you love/enjoy most about our school and what would you like to do more of/start?
Here are some of their responses:
We love –
Every day is different
Everything is fun!
We play outside
We can talk to teachers if we’re lonely
The sport events
The Christmas and Easter experiences in church
We have lots of clubs
World Book Day in our pyjamas
I love getting my brain warm and getting smarter!
We would like more of or start –
Go to forest school more
Classes to do PE together
Do more maths
Spend longer on subjects like History and Science
More trips
School Council will be taking these same questions to their classes next week and we will then meet together to review the responses and see how we can go about making some changes based on the children’s recommendations.
School Uniform
A reminder to parents and carers that we ask that long hair is tied back. Also, please ensure your child is not wearing any jewellery to school. This can be distracting to the children and can become and health and safety concern if it becomes damaged or tangled. Staff will ask children to take items of jewellery off and keep it safe until the end of the day. Small watches to aid telling the time are able to be worn.
Collective Worship
This week in collective worship we have had visits from Paul from Southcrest Church and Maureen from the Bridge Church. We have enjoyed our usual singing worship with Mrs Hamilton and on Monday we shared a story celebrating Ramadan and Eid. We were introduced to Raya and her family as they were celebrating Ramadan. Raya had a 30day calendar which contained a good deed suggestion for each day of the month. We learnt about Ramadan and lots of children shared their own family experiences which was lovely to hear.
The children are now writing their own good deeds for Ramadan at our prayer table.
Some examples of our good deeds and comments:
• Always give peace to others.
• Give a compliment to someone to make their day.
• Keep your head up and keep your mind strong through Ramadan
• Give to charity
• Help others by doing things like picking up coats
• Give people a hug
• Share with others
