This Week

We have had a very busy week in school, with two classes out on visits, pedestrian training, a learning and teaching review with a focus on Science and Geography, and the school photographer!

Our Giraffes children had a brilliant time at Avoncroft Museum on Tuesday and were a real credit to our school through their super behaviour, listening skills and participation in the different activities. Well done to everyone! Our Lions class have had a ‘different’ week, as along with their usual learning, they have enjoyed a very informative visit to the Redditch Central Mosque, and completed the first stage of their pedestrian training where they have learnt road safety rules and how to be safe near the road. Next week they will be putting their newly learnt skills to the test as they complete the unescorted walk of this training.

This week, we have also received information about our new intake for September 2024. We are really looking forward to meeting all our new pupils and will be sending information home to our new families soon. Our Lions children have also found out which Middle Schools they will be moving on to in September and we are starting the process of working with these schools to ensure a smooth transition.

Work with Me

Next week we have two ‘work with me’ sessions. We are inviting parents/carers of our Lions children to join them in the classroom at 2:15pm on Monday 22nd April and parents/carers of our Tigers children on Thursday 25th April at 2:15pm. Please ensure you arrive on time for these sessions. We ask that younger siblings do not attend please so that the focus can be on your child in school. We are really looking forward to seeing you working with your children in the classroom!

Our overall attendance for the year to date is 94.18%

This week’s attendance:

School Trips and Experiences

As mentioned above, it’s been a busy week! Here are some pictures of our Lions children completing their pedestrian training:

Mrs Wood, who was leading the training, commented on the children’s excellent listening skills and engagement during the training – their behaviour was exemplary. Well done everyone!

And here are our Giraffes at Avoncroft Museum:

The children took part in the Three Little Pigs workshop and built houses as part of the story and went inside lots of different buildings, including the windmill.

Finally, our Lions children enjoying the Mosque:

We would like to extend our thanks to everyone at the mosque for their warm welcome and hospitality. All the children were thoroughly engaged throughout the visit, asking meaningful questions and sharing their own knowledge too.

Nut Free School

Please continue to remember that due to severe allergies, we are a nut free school! This means no nuts or products which contain nuts are to be brought into school. Thank you for your support with this.

Uniform Reminder

A further reminder to parents and carers that we ask that long hair is tied back. Also, please ensure your child is not wearing any jewellery to school.

If your child is attending a ‘sporty’ after school club, please come to school wearing your PE kit on these days.

Academy Update

I was hoping to be in a position after the Easter break to update parents and carers on our academisation. As you know, we are joining the Endeavour Schools Trust and we are already working closely with the Endeavour leadership team and other schools within the trust. However, we do not yet have an agreed conversion date, and we are in the process of waiting to hear when this may be while lots of work is going on ‘behind the scenes’ to complete the process. As soon as I have information to share with you on this, I will let you know.

Reading Recommendations

Each week, a member of staff typically shares 2 recommended books on the newsletter in the hope that this might inspire you to try to read something new. We will continue to share staff recommendations; however, we would also like to offer this out to the children themselves. School Council have met with me today and we would like to invite children to share their favourite books with each other via the newsletter in the first instance. Please place your suggestions in the basket on the School Council table.

Learning and Teaching Review

On Tuesday we had a visit from a Local Authority advisor and a member of the Diocese team who completed a learning and teaching review. They looked specifically at Geography, History and Science and their review included looking at pupils’ work and dropping into lessons. When I receive the final report, I will share more with you. However, a few ‘headlines’ from the verbal feedback I received:

• Our Science curriculum is a strength and work in pupil books is consistently strong across the school.

• The teaching of subject specific vocabulary is strong and the children are using this effectively in lessons.

• Children can articulate their learning and they remember what they have been taught.

• Teacher subject knowledge is good.

• We are developing our assessment in foundation subjects and there is some strong evidence of this. This is also an area for us to develop so that there is consistency across subjects and classes.

• The children’s behaviours and attitudes to learning were exemplary. Out visitors saw no low level behaviours and commented at how well our children dealt with transition times, as well as how engaged they were in their learning.

Mini Marathon

Mrs Burling is running the London Marathon again on Sunday and raising money for Pancreatic Cancer Uk…if you tune in to BBC1 in the morning, you might see her! With this in mind, we have signed ourselves up for the ‘TCS Mini London Marathon’ for all the children to complete over a period of a week in school. Our field has been freshly trimmed and each class will be going outside during the week of 29th April to complete a mini marathon. The children will be able to run, jog or walk a distance of approximately 2 miles across the course of a week.

Clubs

Our Summer 1 clubs have got off to a flying start this week. This half term we are offering book club, dodgeball, athletics, archery, well-being, as well as our usual AU Sports club on a Friday. All of these, apart from AU Sports are offered free of charge to our families. There are limited space available in some clubs – please enquire with Mrs Cox if you would like more information on this.

Collective Worship

This week in collective worship, we have continued to focus on our school vision and the psalm:

God’s word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

We have thought about who guides us in our lives and have used this to focus again on our school rules of ‘Ready, Respectful, Safe’.

On Tuesday, Mrs Broughton shared a ‘picture news’ question with the children. Each week they will discuss a ‘big’ question – usually something that is quite topical in the news – and this will be linked to one of the British Values that we learnt all about last term.

This week’s picture news question was:

What does art mean to you? The British Value this focused on was Mutual Respect and Tolerance.

In our Celebration Worship we have said “congratulations” to children impressing their teachers by showing our school values. I was delighted to hand out values certificates to Amelia (Bears), Zayan (Giraffes), Louie (Elephants), Mia (Tigers) and Zaina (Lions).

Lunchtime award winners: Jacob (Lions) and Izzy (Lions)

We also celebrated this week’s St Luke’s Stars of the Week:

St Luke’s Stars of the Week!

Each week in our celebration assembly, the teachers will be choosing a pupil to recognise for their excellent work and attitude to learning. Please see Class Dojo for pictures of our ‘St Luke’s Stars of the Week’. We are very proud of everyone for their hard work and achievements.

Bears: Agnus for trying really hard with writing and using a capital letter and a full stop.

Giraffes: Noah for his valuable ideas, observations and contributions towards discussions at Avoncroft Museum.

Elephants: Afiyah for improved participation in class and great writing and maths work.

Tigers: Nancy for her great examples of how church ministers follow Jesus' teaching.

Lions: Parishay for her independent Geography work to label parts of a river.

Please continue to send in certificates and awards from outside of school achievements so we can share them with the whole school community during our celebration assembly.
